Nostr has lots of spam on public relays and once you get hooked up with people you basically don’t see it, but it’s bad for new users who both have a hard time finding and getting connected to new users and become vulnerable to spam targetting.

Good to know. That is a completely acceptable situation IMO. I just need to explain it to new users. It is a feature, not a problem. "Spam" is truly defined by the individual.
I didn't use social media over the past years much to make a fair comparison, there many people that are not using their real names on Nostr though and that makes it difficult to connect especially while not knowing the person in question. This can give the impression of spam too. The frequency and topics of posts help me figure out the difference between regular users and spam accounts or to understand someone that I don't know in real life. Although some spam accounts are too abvious from a first glance.
