In reality the issue is people. They were slowly rendered harmless and obedient. Who decided to refuse convenience and kept living the old way can just keep living that way. In fact I see most of the worries people have are not mine. Self protection has always been a thing and it was normal to teach kids not to accept candies from strangers. Nothing new.
