It sounds profound, but is only profoundly untrue. Even being an artist requires you to hone your craft, not just wake up everyday with zero plan or vision.

I don't think he's talking about dedicating oneself to any one specific craft/artform. I think he's talking about the art of life, in which one can naturally flow through different disciplines, interests and even professions, without fully committing oneself to (or identifying with) any of them.
