What (man’s) name would Tolly be short for?
I’m drawing a blank other than Ptolemy, which seems unlikely.
Apparently it's Bartholomew.
I thought it could be someone being affectionate for Tolkien.

You’re not the only one to say that, so I suppose it must be! I would have thought Bart would be a more likely shortening (he is old enough to be pre-Simpsons).
I've never heard anyone say Tolly, I just googled it cos it was annoying me. I would never have guessed that tho
