Probably depends on the phone hardware. I was able to get halfway down the block between two pixels.

The messages kept working, then it just stopped, I was sending every 5 steps.
The white paper also mentions using wifi direct as a wireless transport, which should bump it from tens of meters to hundreds. It's not implemented yet though.
