When my wife goes out with friends, I make sure to do the dishes, prepare the kid's lunches, do homework, let her know she can enjoy her night without worrying about home chores.

Women have enough mental charge, do whatever you can to alleviate some. No need for flowers or chocolate or other consumerist crap.
