I wonder if there has ever been a time when there was a healthy focus on chastity as opposed to a Victorian era snobbery. Though almost anytime before the advent of modern birth-control was chaste by comparison.

I'd like to take this time to point out that birth-control is a raging lie. It has a failure rate, and any failure rate at all will still result in a significant number of pregnancies. When you multiply the lower likelihood of pregnancy by a much high occurrence, that is what you get.
Abortion exists in the west to close the loop on the lie that sex and childbearing are disconnected.
The laws were mostly created to protect inherited property, I suspect. So, a topic for the wealthy.
