Guilt or Shame is a tactic used to oppress groups/individuals into behaving within a "desired" norm. This norm is desired by the weaker party, the party which would use violent coercion if they were strong enough.

The act of shaming is a feminine trait for this reason.

When the mental burden of guilt is shed, cowards can be dealt with precipitously, either through legitimate negotiation or acts of violence.

The goal is to not allow oneself to be shamed, but rather discuss forward options. If negotiation fails, violence is required.
