rail is great for heavy cargo like coal, gravel, ore etc. it is 4 times more efficient than truck in terms of ton-miles per gallon. if you need to connect a coal mine with a coal power plant rail is the way to go.

the problem is that rail cannot be integrated into people's lives. people have to build their lives around the rail. this is what i oppose.

a car will go wherever you need it to. rail won't. rail demands that you come to it instead.
