I've heard that you can let your friends use it to make payments; what benefit does that have for them or me?

Privacy and being able to hold your own money.
Privacy because there's no third party who gets to know who you were sending money to, what payments you receive and the memo information within.
Being able to hold your own money is just as with any other Bank-type service. They may be insolvent or go offline or one day ask for personal information to release what they were holding for you.
Can you expound on "being able to hold your own money"
Don't I already hold my own money if I have a Bitcoin wallet?
