The book I’ve just finished reading included a nice bit of history on why tea took off in the UK, and it’s all about the caffeine (and subsequently money).

Industrialists worked out that less mistakes were made by workers that drank tea (rather than beer) in breaks, with the added bonus that they could also work longer hours and increase productivity. Henceforth tea ladies were employed and workers were caffeinated to the hilt!
