Relays are where notes are stored and queried from. Anyone can run a relay, and mutals can see your posts if they are the same relays as you. This also provides censorship resistance. If one relay censors you, you can join other relays and your friends can connect to those to still receive your messages.

How can I run a relay ? How much storage data should I expect ?

I run the most popular relay and have only used 340gb so far, it has millions of notes.

“Only”

Any instructions on how to run a relay? Can it be topic specific for a relay?

Are most relays strictly disk-based for reads? Or are there in-memory caching implementations?

strfry is so fast it feels like a cache

Sorry but what’s a relay?

What would be considered a “large note” disk size wise?

Is there a list of relays to Join

https://nostr.watch has a great compilation of them.

Relays are just one piece, a very important piece, of the decentralized puzzle. I recommend that people run their own private relay, when they're ready, so that they can be in charge of and backup their own data.
