I am not sure I follow what you wrote.

I do see the necessity of free relays. I just don't see the benefit of paid ones as a "reduction of spam". If one uses free relays at the same time there would be spam anyway. But since i mainly look at posts of people I follow - I sort of prevent the spam myself.

And since the recommendation is to have just few relays. I don't see network effect of running private ones. it just does not make sense to join them.

I see it similarly. But so what with spam...🤪 No matter. Well, I can set up and organise my client in such a way that I get zero spam. The only ones who might have to worry about spam filtering are the relay operators, because they can't expect their paying users to do that. The core of my flippant statement is: Without open relays, there is no nostr, because paid relays take data from open relays. That is a fact. And with open relays there is always spam, that's just the way it is and it will never change.🙃

I don't really care about the spam. as you said, I control it myself anyway.

I guess paid relays are in theory could be more reliable, they might be faster I guess(?). But I don't buy the nostr:npub18ams6ewn5aj2n3wt2qawzglx9mr4nzksxhvrdc4gzrecw7n5tvjqctp424 comment on paid being superior due to reduction of spam.
