We'll need batteries that store ~20x more energy in the same mass before electric can compete with diesel for those heavy machines. Its not happening soon.
Aluminium - air does come close.
(But everything else about it sucks.)

Aluminum air.... Isn't that thermite? I vaguely remember MacGyver using aluminum filings on a lock to break it
