Did that internationally from Taiwan to the USA and back with the slimmed-down absolute essentials (~450 lbs or ~250 books) thrice. I also prefer hardcover, have since replenished and significantly added to that number, will be moving again soon, and feel your pain. It's no joke to move that many books safely—each one is precious cargo.
