Are we talking first century church? Because if so I am pretty sure it's original sin was not a preoccupation with weilding the sword of the state. That would come later.
(Not trying to pick a fight. I am actually a little confused by the statement)
It was quoted in Simonetta Carr's article in the most recent Modern Reformation (Sep/Oct '24), "Christ and Country," where she briefly surveys episodes when the church grasped for the sword. I can see how it might be ambiguous outside of that context...apologies. The whole MR issue is pretty good--it should be posted online in a couple weeks.
