The weakness of #ATProto isn’t at the instance level.
In fact, running an AT protocol “instance”—or rather, a #PDS—could actually be more affordable than running an #ActivityPub-enabled service. This is because a PDS is decoupled from relays and the firehose, whereas #Mastodon or #Pixelfed servers, for example, are not.
There are benefits and drawbacks to both approaches. To put it succinctly, #Bluesky is based on microservices, whereas Mastodon relies on macroservices.
Personally, I prefer the macroservice approach because I like my server to handle most of what I need it to do.
