Well there's a large number of meanings to the specific word used

From the Hebrew, the word can mean being or soul:

In the Septuagint, the word used is derived from psyche, a word with connotations that changed over time. If the english translators tried to transliterate "psyche" for the text, we'd find lots of people thinking God blew a mind into Adam's nostrils.
