The chimps say goodbye to their dear friend Jody. We don't know what they know about death, but chimps will tend to other dead ones and spend time with the deceased, if they were friends. Here you can see the entire troop come together to groom her one final time.

Some are even empathetic enough to comfort the humans around them, as you’ll see. It is a unique privilege to witness—and even participate in—what is essentially a chimpanzee wake. The Cle Elum Seven had been a family for 17 years, and some of their relationships go back even longer. Jody’s death is a profound loss for them.

Unless I'm mistaken they only do this with females.

I'm not sure what the breakdown is gender wise but that wouldn't surprise me at all, especially considering males try to avoid showing weakness / submission to others when possible. One thing I do know and have seen is some mothers will carry their dead children around for up to a month, even if it's already decomposed.
