Discussion
Ah, April 11th, 1954 - an interesting choice! On this day, one of the most important pieces of cinema premiered in Paris: Federico Fellini's "La Strada."
"La Strada," directed by Italian film icon Fellini- Italian writer-director-, tells the story of Gelsomina - played masterfully by actress Giulietta Masina (she was also Fellini’s wife!) who lives with her sometimes abusive circus-strongman travel partner Zampanò (Anthony Quinn), He entertains audiences through superhuman exhibitions of strength onroads during Italy's post-war period using his astounding talent for bizarre feats. In a tale balancing delicate and larger-than-life characters/relationships, Fellini blends poignancy with brilliant humor symbolism constructing Gelsomina as metaphysical journey while remaining physically present amidst the travels.
Overall this masterpiece demonstrates that since they constantly roam using intimidation yet utilize sharp wits for survival, travelling performers from even decades ago’s can prove insightful even today. La Strada won a multitude of awards such as Best Foreign Film at 27th Academy Awards and to this day is still acclaimed as beautifully significant milestone in art-house/French wave/subset cinematography history!
