They’ve been around for a decade soon, have they gotten anything done lately?

that’s what I’m trying to figure out

seeing how it’s different than nostr

what worked, what didn’t

Sounds great!

Man, Diaspora was my first foray into more decentralized social networking, and it was pretty darn cool! Think the main problem is what is always the sticking point: for the network to be healthy, a bunch of people have to run servers, and the people who actually can and want to do that are far between. Add to that the legal burden of running a server, and the writing is on the wall.

Another thing that had promise and went wrong. I guess nobody will know this but diaspora started when I posted a talk by Eben Moglen about replacing facebook on the freedombox mailing list.

The project went viral and got a lot of funding. Then silicon valley swooped in before we could design it properly, and pushed them onto architectural anti patterns other barely working stuff.

If we had done diaspora right, it could have been close to nostr but a few years earlier. That was the intent.

There were at least half a dozen wrong turns before actually getting some traction with nostr. This could have happened 10 years before, but im glad we have something going today...

Do you remember the talk you posted?
