Important to note. A guilty plea DOES NOT set legal precedent

Meaning there won’t be legal precedent set on developers, privacy, etc from a plea deal. A guilty plea is a resolution between the prosecution and defense — it doesn’t involve a judge ruling on the lawfulness of conduct or setting legal standards.

This sucks for these guys…but I get why they’re doing it. Media and future decisions may try to point to this plea in the future, but a new case would have to be built.

In fact this is a bit of a fall on the sword moment for the samourai guys. They would have likely lost with this judge and this set of facts. So by taking the plea they avoid precedent that is harmful to the broader wallet ecosystem. It’s a good move. Not as good as winning, but the odds of them winning this seemed very low.

I didn’t realise the judge was so biased. It must have been a difficult decision for #samourai. I hope they don’t get much time.

Yeah good point

If this wouldve set a precedent, why is the prosecution accepting a plea deal ?

Isn't it a sign of weakness ?

They always push people into plea deals. Thats just how the system works.
