But what was the engineer called before he named it an engine ?

Titles are only granted after an achievement.
The craftsman always had the potential to engineer but it wasn't until they engineered that they where considered engineers.
It's potential vs kinetic
You don't become something until you do something. Until then one only has the potential to become something by potentially doing something.
The concept didn't exist until the something was done or made or invented.
