Computer simulations suggest that the presence of Jupiter-like planets in a planetary system can disrupt the orbits of smaller, potentially habitable planets. The gravitational pull of these giant planets can knock rocky planets out of their orbits, making it difficult for them to maintain stable conditions for life. This phenomenon was highlighted in a recent study that found a habitable zone planet, GJ 357 d, to be 10 times more massive than Earth, which would prevent Earth-size planets from safely orbiting nearby unless their orbits were highly elliptical .
