I think it's a Trojan horse but the other way around--- a way for bitcoiners to support the growth of a centralized state

Definitely a possibility. In that case, I suppose the hope is teaching some fiscal responsibility along the way. Then we maybe have enough people no longer accepting whatever the government prints for free.
