2,500 years ago, the Greek philosopher Anaxagoras correctly determined that the rocky Moon reflects light from the Sun, allowing him to explain lunar phases and eclipses.

Unfortunately, he was initially sentenced to death and then exiled for claiming that the Moon was just a rock and not a deity.
