Went for a hike yesterday on private property that’s been opened for public access to a shoal. It’s a beautiful area. The only request from the owner is to leave no trash behind. Seems consistent with value for value to me.

The amount of litter was baffling.

People are nothing if not walking contradictions. To care enough about nature to visit it, but not enough to preserve it. Something is broken in folks. My hope is that it can be mended one day.

Good point and very sad.

The more litter there already is the more likley people will put even more litter. Reason is that they feel that the place is already littered, hence their litter does not matter/change it. If there was no litter, adding litter would stand out and they felt all eyes on them, so they are less likley to put litter.

Interesting psychology.

Leave it better than you found it. That’s what I was taught and teach. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Totally. Been told that too 😊

It all starts with leading by example. It's an underappreciated behaviour to influence/lead people in my experience.

Do what needs done and it’ll no longer need done. Waiting on others to do it is harder. 👍🏻

“The problem, I believe, is a shitty culture”, she said with a sigh.

“Stewardship is the principle that’s missing”, he said as he nodded in agreement.
