Niphon, a monk of Mount Athos, reluctantly accepted the patriarchal throne of Constantinople. Known for his ascetic life and strict moral standards, he clashed with Emperor Alexander over the Emperor's scandalous behavior. Niphon rebuked him publicly and refused him communion. Imprisoned and exiled, Niphon remained steadfast, eventually abdicating rather than compromising his principles. His integrity inspired many to repentance.
