It was possible to become obese back before seed oils when people still ate preindustrial food by simply swamping: aka chronicly eating high fat in concert with high sugar.

This is actually the origin of the word "rich foods"; if you go back far enough, only the affluent could afford to frequently eat things such as cakes which combined high levels of fat and sugar to create a moment of sinful decadence

The Randle Cycle, where the body quickly stores sugar as saturated fat on the body when dietary fats are being consumed at the same time, is the underlying reason why people get fat.

Seed oils and other industrial substitutes accelerate this process by breaking glucose metabolism and loading the body with high levels of oxidative PUFA.
