New research suggests that in people with bipolar disorder and/or epilepsy, their neurons are unable to process glucose through the normal ATP cycle. Sugar is instead processed through a secondary pathway, which causes a buildup of sodium and calcium in the neurons. This buildup changes the electrical potential of the neurons which changes their firing patterns. The whole thing can be bipassed and the buildup prevented by keeping the body in a ketogenic state.
