That's the question.
It was just a meaningless slaughter of civilians that had nothing to do with any battle.
In a word, evil.
Same with Nagasaki. They literally targeted the cathedral when dropping the bomb. Before nuking it, it was known as the capital of Christianity in Asia, and that cathedral was the largest in Asia.
