So according to nostr:nprofile1qqsqgc0uhmxycvm5gwvn944c7yfxnnxm0nyh8tt62zhrvtd3xkj8fhgprdmhxue69uhkwmr9v9ek7mnpw3hhytnyv4mz7un9d3shjqgcwaehxw309ahx7umywf5hvefwv9c8qtmjv4kxz7gpzemhxue69uhhyetvv9ujumt0wd68ytnsw43z7s3al0v And my own brief reading of their protocol, hosting your own instance, isn't like hosting a mastodon instance like I had kind of assumed. It is not a totally independent but federated server.

It gives you more control over your data, but everything is generally synced back to their primary giga server.

Bluesky’s version of decentralization is making you do the work and pay the hosting fees, while they maintain ultimate data control. i kinda think its a grift.

In all fairness, I don't fully understand how their protocol works, but it sounds like it's a pretty accurate assumption.

i was pretty stoked about it in the beginning, but started looking at it, and was left with that impression 🤷 but things can change. nothing is static

I will say though the one thing that they have going for them is due to their centralized nature they don't have the problems that nostr does when it comes to search and content discovery so there's that.

If someone likes football or cats, they can subscribe to a topic and see all the posts relating to that pretty quickly.

seems like sucking everything nostr into a single server and making it searchable wouldn’t be to terribly difficult.

id never use it, but quite possible to do as a service for those who have a #hashtag #phobia.
