Inbox or outbox?

I don’t know either or… lol

Outbox is pretty straightforward. You probably want at least one large relay, like relay.damus.io or nos.lol. Then two other relays is sufficient. I go with a relay that I control, but that is accessible for others to read from, such as a self-hosted HAVEN relay, or one hosted on relay.tools, and then a relay that is a bit smaller, but maybe associated with a community I belong to, so I go with relay.nostrplebs.com.

If you are a more private person, and you don't want just anyone to be able to see your notes, you may want to limit your outbox relay to just one lockbox relay, such as lockbox.fiatjaf.com. When you post to this relay type, ONLY those who you are following can read your notes. However, it only works if that is the only relay you are posting to, so you cannot have any other outbox relays.

Inbox is a bit more involved and depends on how much you want to manually block spammers vs having them show up in your replies all the time. Personally, I don't want to do that manually and have a mile-long mute list. Npubs are not scarce, but my time definitely is. That is why I only have 2 inbox relays, and I control both of them. One is my web-of-trust relay and the other is my HAVEN public inbox relay. You can run your own web-of-trust relay EXTREMELY easily using Nostr Relay Tray by nostr:npub1syjmjy0dp62dhccq3g97fr87tngvpvzey08llyt6ul58m2zqpzps9wf6wl. You can also use web-of-trust relays that are operated by others, such as wot.utxo.one.

There are also DM Inbox relays, which you may have the ability to set up in your client. This really is ideally a relay you control, such as HAVEN's private inbox relay. However, you can also use one you host on relay.tools, or a paid inbox relay, such as inbox.nostr.wine.

Depending on the client, you may have the ability to set up other types of relays, but the above should be a good start.

I appreciate this nugget of information.

I do plan on having a self-hosted relay to preserve my posts from Nostr, but in the future.

I’m good with using outbox relays.

Do you have a website with a list of relays?

Here's a couple of resources for you:

https://next.nostr.watch/ - This site lets you explore all publicly accessible relays. Currently about 1200 relays.

https://stats.nostr.band/ - This is an interesting Nostr stats page for a lot of different data-points. Bear in mind, though, it only shows information that nostr.band knows where to gather from. Any portions of the network that are not accessible to it won't be included in the stats. Toward the bottom of the page you can see which relays are being used the most.

https://jumble.social - This is a Nostr web client that puts relays front and center. If you go to the "Explore" page, you can see which relays your follows have favorited, if any, or a list of all relays Jumble can find. Selecting the relay will show you a feed of the notes that are on it, if it allows you to read from it.

I added about 4 relays using https://stats.nostr.bulid/ - the most used within last 30 days.

I appreciate the help!

What's good or bad in an ever changing world?

Fair point.

Good = working 🀷🏽
