That's pretty standard for musicals. What plot they have is just a contrivance, chaining together a series of thematically linked songs.

By the time I watched it, I was *desperate* for escapism, so I turned off my higher reasoning faculties completely, and strapped in for the ride. The combo of nostalgia and emotional payoff was just right for that. It may not have been the Star Trek we deserved, but it was the Star Trek I needed right now ; )
