-THE BORACAY ISLAND LIFE-

Can a keyboard shape the entire sound of a band?
In the case of the doors, absolutely. Ray Manzarek’s hypnotic, hypnotic keyboard work was the backbone of the band’s identity. Without a bassist in the lineup, Manzarek played bass lines and melody on his instruments, giving the doors his signature depth and drama.
From the opening notes of "Light My Fire" to the haunting licks of "Riders on the Storm," Manzarek's rendition was psychedelic and classic, blending jazz, blues and rock into a mesmerizing stew. His organ was a lead voice, not a background, equal in power to the poetry and presence of Jim Morrison.
Manzarek co-founded the doors in 1965 after a chance meeting with Morrison on Venice Beach. Their creative partnership would give birth to some of the most provocative music of the '60s. Even after Morrison's death, Manzarek kept the band's flame alive, after touring and recording with Robby Krieger.
He died in 2013 at the age of 74, but his influence is still vivid. Ray Manzarek expanded the role of keyboards in rock, turning them into an instrument of mood, tension and storytelling. His sound was the spiritual world under the fire of the gates: mysterious, bold, unforgettable.
