Researchers recently tested to see the effects of offering small financial incentives to people to discern between true or false headlines.

Through it, they found that small incentives resulted in greater agreement between those to the left & right of the political spectrum.

They hypothesised that it wasn’t through a lack of knowledge of the facts that people accept or believe headlines, but rather a lack of motivation for individuals to be accurate, or a conflicting motivation that interfered with their decision.
