Listening to mainstream economists is like

listening to mainstream media or

listening to the "mainline" churches--

"deflation is bad; inflation is good"

"doing your own research is dangerous to our democracy"

"be true to yourself, trust your heart, find the divine within"

--in nearly every sphere, truth is more apt to be found in the "little platoons" of the serious thinkers who are considered "on the fringe"

and if you're very blessed, you'll find even smaller pockets where a few of these spheres overlap

Great post!

I agree with you but I have to say that just over 5 years ago 'I trusted my heart' when it told me to turn all that shit off and I am better off for it now.

Good instincts and discernment! I mean something a little different. Our hearts are in general not wise guides, we tend to follow the shiny thing (that too often has a hook in it). Think [Jeremiah 17:9](https://esv.org/Jeremiah+17.9).

Where the zeitgeist says "look within," Scripture says "look to Him."
