for those frequencies it's better (and way smaller and effective) to use what is known as a Yagi antenna.

I'd start to use parabolic antennas around and higher than 10GHz...

basically stacked Yagi antennas.

An antenna will have a higher gain (sense of directivity and effectivity in gain of signal) if the range of frequencies is not large and thus the antenna is specified for a specific purpose.

Some say they achieve some gain (directivity) by using a wok in combination with their wifi-dongle. That would be the really cheapass solution
