Liu Xiaobo wrote whatever he wanted and he was imprisoned multiple times for it, until his last eleven-year jail sentence (for asking for the peaceful transition of one-party rule to a multi-party democracy) led to his death.

Liu Xia sought out Liu Xiaobo to get married to him. They were wedded in a labor re-education camp in 1996.

"When they promptly applied for a marriage license, camp authorities, puzzled at the unusual request, felt they needed to check with her to be sure she knew what she was doing. She answered: “Right. That ‘enemy of the state’? I want to marry him!”"
