Do you use the NewsFeedEradicator chrome extension? It removes the main page feed on Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook. It actually makes the experience for checking those sites not so hard on the mind.

Of those four I only use Youtube and I use their own app. I don't find it too distracting.
I'm also a bit paranoid about browser plugins that have access to these kinds of accounts.
