Yeah, originally you had a phone number and then you had to set a username AFTER you registered if you wanted. Everybody who got single character twitter handles got them because they knew somebody at the company and asked for a favor. For example, @C married @K… and @t created internet explorer for the Mac… they were all old school friends of twitter.
