I couldnt find any information on that. My guess is that it was just a personal preference of whoever designed the flag. All flags from this era where hand sewn and had various types of stars. For example, the flag flown at George Washington's headquarters, had 6-pointed stars.

Thank you for looking into it!!!!! If I were to design it I’d make the stars a smile face shape heheh πŸ™‚ I think the 7 points looks cool!

Yea I would have put them in a circle around the 76, similar to Betsy Ross' design, but πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ My fav thing about this one is that with the white as base of the field instead of red, it's counter to what you are used to seeing
