Never forget the three main purposes of a reasoned argument:

Thesis – Putting your point forward and convincing the other person if they're wrong

Antithesis – Letting the other person put forward their point and being convinced if you're wrong

Synthesis – Combining both points into something more convincing, resulting in qualitative improvement, then going on to convince the entire world of your newfound truth!
