3d printing community is honestly one of the best for open source imo, no exaggeration. millions of 3d models for almost anything, easy to adjust with any cad software.

some designs are super premium & really well made. it’s a pretty awesome community, with all kinds of people. worth exploring and being a part of.

💯 Bitcoiners should restart the maker movement

My reply was to VR, which really isn't open at all.

meta quest os is android under the hood. you can technically access it file system, install apks, maybe even root it.

it has a debug mode it’s kinda like a official jailbreak, lets you install alt stores like sidequest, bypassing quest store.

hardware is solid on quest 3. but if you’re after future hardware upgrades, look into pc vr

one thing though, meta can end this anytime.

most common way needs an app from quest store. if they remove it, sideloading gets way harder.

& with full hardware control, they can even kill previously sideloaded apps in one update.

so that’s always a possibility.

No way I'm going to buy a hardware that I know can change the TOS at any moment. Pay a hefty price and then learn you now have to provide additional KYC to use your fancy screen or something? No, thanks.

very fair, pcvr is definitely the way to go then. in fact, the guy i mentioned in my previous reply, i highly recommend checking out that thread, or maybe even talking to him. he had a strong opinion about my choice of meta quest, which i totally get.

he suggested a headset with not only open hardware but also a new tracking technology that’s kind of becoming an industry standard, developed by htc and valve.

i’m also planning to explore the pcvr space, maybe in a few months. by then, i’ll have a better answer.
