they can be videos, you just need to find a place to host them. try streamable.com?

Yes, but GIFs autoplay, and videos don't. If I upload to youtube, people need to click a link first

that all depends on your client. many clients play the videos inline. no ugly links. 😉

I believe mp4s will auto play (& you can even loop them) if there's no sound
