I was relating to a co-worker about the struggle of being a software developer and the notion that no one knows (or cares) what it is I do. To many a computer is just a black box that does stuff.

Then I realized this applies to many things. These days, People don't even know what their car does, it's just a horseless carriage that moves along a plane. Not that I know much more, but I do a little.

Contrast that with the people that came before us. They were so much more capable than people now. Heck, even a generation ago. My uncle rebuilt an old 1950s truck. he didn't know what the hell he was doing. He figured it out though.

We're lesser people now, myself included. And it just breaks my heart.

This post is just my own self-loathing. It looks like commentary on the current times, but it's really a commentary about myself.

As we evolve we specialise and create more abstraction layers.
