People really dont give Nintendo and the Japanese credit enough.
They are incredible programmers.
What's amazing about that is there is very little programming jobs in Japan. But the video game developers are amazing. With a smaller talent pool to pick from.
Their video games, like Mario and Zelda run on their own game engines.
You know Microsoft? One of the worlds largest companies couldn't maintain their halo engine?
They gave up and switched to a comercial engine. Because they couldn't or wouldn't hold on to game engine talent.
Yet Nintendo has no problem doing this.
Mario Odyssey is incredibly fun. I think the only platforms to come close recently is Astro Bot.
Also made in Japan.
There are benefits to the somewhat broken Japanese system, and hanging onto talent is definitely one of them.

Im watching my son play Mario odyssey and I see levels clearly inspired by areas in legend of Zelda ocarina of time. Which is like decades older. So it was probably the same designers working on both games. 20 years apart.
