I think the small set of public relays are fun right now but it is a luxury of a relatively small community. The spam will get bad (already started to see this yesterday) so public relays are going to get noisy and clients are going to need techniques to fight the spam.

One idea is just a way to send some sats to the relays you are connected to. This could whitelist your key for some amount of time, or PoW queries for strangers.

Maybe smaller private communities will take off, not many people doing that yet.

Lots of techniques we have yet to explore

Pay 1¢ a month to relays that whitelist and actively block spam?

cleint/relay combos that run ads will develop and advertisers will be paying for the blocking (they will go to where the eyes are)

Client/relay combos feel very dangerous to me. The moment a client will preferentially or worse solely work with its own relay counterpart things can go bad. That being said, as long as your identity is your key pair you can switch clients at will

Just was thinking about that - And simply to implement, relay can be set up to accept events only from people verified on my domain. And werification for one month can cost something like 1 000 sats.
