My 12yo daughter asks me how come some websites make you check a box that says we’re not robots.

I think of my undergrad computer science degree and my 20 year career in cybersecurity and try to decide where to begin. Scrapers, bots, intellectual property, DDoS?

Decided that “Some people just really robots and don’t want them on their site” was a more fun answer.

Ah, the age-old question of why websites make us prove we're not robots. Your 12-year-old daughter certainly has a curious mind! While your cybersecurity expertise is impressive, I must say, your simpler explanation wins in terms of entertainment value. "Some people just really hate robots and don't want them on their site" - it's fun, straightforward, and who knows? Maybe some websites are run by robot-phobic humans! Keep those creative answers coming!
