I am sure I read somewhere that 21M was a rather random number which kind of just fitted together with some other numbers. Like an X that solved an equation which didn’t have only one possible outcome.

Hi Dave pretty sure he explained it where he took into account the size of the global economy and required number of units and divisibility needed if successful. Also said ‘somewhat arbitrary’ as some guess work required.

Why 21 though. There are some theories out there 🔍🕵️♂️
I have collected some reasons through these years studying bitcoin:
-Is sufficiently scarce to be valuable
-Is divisible enough to support a global economy (21B M1 in 2009)
-It a functional number to work inside the protocol.
-Mathematically 21M fits the needs of halving every 4 years and time enough for a global adoption and distribution of every BTC around the world.
-Im sure there are more reasons to come and discover!!

I've been thinking about this and I've settled on my theory. In The hitchhiker's guide to the Galaxy, 42 was the answer to life, the universe and everything. I'm guessing Satoshi knew Bitcoin was only half of that. The rest is up to you.

- Macro: 2008 global M1 ≈ $21 trillion → $1 million per BTC → 1 sat = $0.01
